Danny Brown rules. That’s really all you need to know, but because I am a benevolent and indulgent writer, I supposed I will elaborate a little ... FOR YOU.
The Detroit native with the electric hair and the best smile on the planet first got the hip-hop world’s attention with 2010’s darkly imaginative release The Hybrid (which was actually his sophomore effort after the largely slept-on Hot Soup) and has only been on the rise ever since. He took the hip-hop world by raspy-voiced storm last year with XXX, a record as complex and subversive as the rapper himself, wrought with references to drugs, sex and poverty—yet still hilarious and playful, all delivered in Danny’s distinctive and infectious voice.
I caught up with the best-dressed weirdo in the rap game while he was on the Long Live A$AP tour, and played a rousing a game of bests/worsts. Here’s how it went down:
What’s the best part about touring with Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky?
We smoke a lot of weed.
What’s the worst part?
There’s no worst. We’re homies!
What are the three best cities you have ever played?
Portland, Seattle and Minneapolis.
What are the three worst cities you have ever played?
One time Dallas was, but yesterday Dallas was tight. Salt Lake City. That’s it.
What’s a city you have never played that you really want to play?
I guess something like Rio in Brazil or something.
Would you ever live anywhere besides Michigan?
When you get dressed in the morning what do you think about?
I don’t think about anything. I just get dressed.
You’re wearing all black head-to-toe. Are black clothes the best?
I wouldn’t say that. I think it’s more of a seasonal thing.
If you could collaborate with one artist on the planet, living or dead, who would it be?
I did it! I collaborated with Purity Ring. They’re on my next album. Also I guess I would say Dizzee Rascal, but I’m going to do that too.
What else is going on with the next album?
Almost done with it, just trying to finish it up.
